Reviews

"The music of Sophe Lux is deep and powerful. This band seduces the soul with their rich, lush, landscapes of poetry and sound."
—Jessica Stiles, Dj Kboo Radio

"With thick, moody melodies, Sophe Lux places heavenly hypno-vocals over weighty rock like a drunken jazz singer in a fit of raging depression. These songs take lumbering swings at you in a mad, lovely, musical dance."
—Music Fest NW Reviews 9/04

"All of my favorite feminist pop stars have been letting me down lately from Liz Phair's spectacular career suicide to Cat Power's contrived onstage meltdowns to PJ Harvey's tributes to greasy Vincent Gallo, none of these ladies seem to be able to keep it together, so you can imagine my joy when I discovered Sophe Lux. Wendy Haynes fronts a talented band that plays lush, brainy, girl positive pop. Dark but never veering into emo territory, Hayne's lyrics are both intelligent and heartfelt"
—Portland Mercury 1/19/05

"Sophe Lux simultaneously evokes the dark intensity of PJ Harvey and the observant eye of Suzanne Vega."
—Fred Von Lohmann, Attorney

"Sophe Lux is an intensely literate feminist pop band."
—The Oregonian, 4/04

"Sophe Lux's (lead singer) has a beautiful voice and accompanies it with beautiful music…heart-wrenching lyrics and passionate vocals. (Haynes) isn't holding anything back as she sings about life and love … emotion is easily shared with the listener."
—Opening Bands

"A little bit Tori, a little bit raspy, a little bit country-takes command of Plastic Apple's brooding, melodic vibe. Each song is packed with philosophic and theological musings."
—The Willamette Week 5/03

"Sophe Lux's music is dark, arresting, passionate, and cathartic"
—Chris Monaco, Good Life Music

"With wry, often sexual lyrics and grinding guitar hooks, Sophe Lux draws from Liz Phair. Lux's vocals are more emotional than Phair's, though with a sweet sadness that can be quite endearing"
—Portland Mercury, 4/04

"Hip-hopping Lifesavas headlined the house but too late. The buzz had already been stolen by Sophe Lux, fronted by Wendy Haynes, lyrical sister of Oscar-coated film director Todd Haynes."
—The Oregonian, Living 6/30/03

"Sophe Lux is a deep and important band."
—Eric Laddel, Universal Music

"Intelligent rock stars seem to be a rarity these days... which is why Sophe Lux should be relished and soaked up like the sun... deliciously unraveling guitar and bass lines... unbeatable garage-rock riffs... a cocktail of Liz Phair, Tori Amos, and Cat Power."
—The Oregonian A&E, 4/03

"Haynes' lovely voice (gives us) strong moving songs with lyrics that bite deep. It's fair to say that Sophe Lux is not your average band. Bless Them."
—Anna Maria Stjarnell, Collected Sounds 1/04

"Sophe Lux's lead singer definitely has the poise, polish, and talent to carry a crowd home in her pocket."
—NW Drizzle, 2/04

"Sophe Lux is a moody rock band centered on one very talented woman. That woman is Wendy Lynne Haynes, a highly original singer-songwriter in the vein of PJ Harvey and Cat Power. Her songs are dark, surreal narratives delivered with the lazy, lovesick cadence of a woman who's been there and back."
—Willamette Week, 9/03

"Sophe Lux: A rich blend of the world's finest indie legends."
—Sizzling CD's
